copying pages from Confluence on a VM to Confluence on the web

Nancy Gerits February 4, 2020

Hello,

I am trying to restore Confluence pages from a backup Confluence instance on a VM (or alternatively copy the entire page tree over). How would I approach this best as I cannot click and drag or copy a page?

thank you

Nancy

Can you explain more your problem Nancy ?

Does the import failed ?

Nancy Gerits February 4, 2020

Background: I had one space with contents that needed to be divided over two spaces. Hence, I created a second space and copied the relevant info over. That went well. Then I went on to tailor the first space (i.e. remove a range of pages from the first space which were specific to the second space). That went well too. Then I accidentally deleted the newly created (second) space. As spaces cannot be recovered once deleted, and I lost the site-specific pages in the first space after tailoring, I would have to start from scratch again. Luckily we did have a backup which I can access via a VM. The idea was to copy the pages from the original 'tailored' space (before tailoring) to a new space on the cloud.

Question: what is the most efficient way of doing that?

I know one can export single pages to Word and then import them into Confluence in the cloud, but I would like to do it in batch if that were possible (it would save time, as the VM backup access expires by tomorrow.. )

Any help, ideas, tips or tricks are very welcome!

All the best

Nancy

I am now exporting the space to XML and will then see if I can import it into the new space on the cloud..

Try to export from VM and import on Cloud Confluence without Word on the first attempt. Import may fail because there are difference between Cloud and Server solutions.

Let us know if your attempt is not successful.

Thank you for your response.

There are too many pages to export them one by one.

I have exported an xml file of the entire space and tried to follow the manual with regards to importing the xml file, but I cannot find the "General Configuration > Backup and Restore" under the cogwheel. Is this something that only admins see?

I suggest you to follow the 'Import the space content to the destination site' instructions'.

And you should call an administrator to execute the task, you haven't the permissions.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your response. I have received admin rights.

On the page to import content, it seems that it's only text files that can be imported, while I have a zip file (with lots of directories, I suppose one for each page, including images) from the xml export of the confluence space. Can I use a zip file?

How would I know where the import directory is (don't know the dir paths)? Could I upload the file from my desktop?

Thanks again!

Nancy,

As I couldn't answer yesterday I hope you succeed.

If not, a quick answer. Upload the full .zip file and delete the the unwanted space(s).
