migrating spaces from standalone 4.x to cloud

I have a 10 user license for Confluence 4.3.1 that has 12 spaces with many pages, images and attachments.  The company has an instance of Confluence cloud.  We just tried to do an xml export of one of the 4.x spaces and import into cloud and it chokes with a simple "There was an error during import" message.

Is there a step by step process we need to get the content moved over?  Trial upgrades to the current 4.x environment to get it to a point where cloud will accept the xml?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi @Darrel Damon ,

My recommendation here would be to upgrade from Confluence 4.3.1 to 5.10.9 - then use the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant to bring spaces from that Confluence Server into the company's Confluence Cloud site. You can download an installer (the installer executable also can upgrade your existing install) for Confluence 5.10 from the Confluence download archives.

I see that the Confluence Server licenses attached to your Atlassian account expired quite a long time ago. Since any of the Server licenses I see on your account aren't valid for Confluence 5.10, I'd ask that you create a ticket with our billing and licensing team. Mention that you have an expired Server license which is too old to upgrade to a version supported by the Cloud Migration assistant. We will be able to provide some licensing help for you through the support portal.

I am running into some difficulty and need a bit of direction.  You referenced the installer executable. Unfortunately I could not locate the installer executable in any of the archived packages.  Perhaps I'm not looking for the right thing.
In any case I tried the manual install options.  Uninstalled the 4.3 service so that it wouldn't interfere.  Updated the data directory to point to my existing data and then went to the bin director to run start-confluence.  That ran without a hitch but when I try to go to the app via localhost:8090, I get the following.  I suspect that I have an incorrect version of Java but cannot find the documentation to tell me what versions of Java are supported.  Any advice is appreciated.

Hey @Darrel Damon , I apologize for the delay here as this message slipped my inbox.

1. Installer file: I'm not certain which platform you're on - so here are the direct links to the installer files:
   
   1. Confluence 5.10.9 installer for Linux (a .bin file you can add the +x permission to and run) - this will have an option to upgrade
   2. Confluence 5.10.9 installer for Windows (a .exe file with a GUI install wizard)
2. Java version: the installers actually bundle their own Java runtime environment. If you want to use system Java or are using the .tar.gz archive file, the supported Java version is Java 8 - you should be able to use any update version in Java 8 (except for a couple listed in the Supported Platforms page - u25, u31, and u45). The latest Java 8 updates can be picked up from this link if you need an installer.

Hopefully, using the installer executables or the latest Java 8 release will resolve the error you're seeing on startup. If you continue encountering errors, give me a shout! I want to ensure you're able to get the Cloud migration tested without further trouble.
