I havent used wikis or confluence for some years, but one of the more powerful features was to simply type in [somepage] to either create the page if it was not there or link to it if it was. I am pretty sure confluence used to have a way to do the latter at least, but cant find it. The only option I can see is to use the link icon at the top of the editing area, which is much slower.
Anyone?

I have the same "issue". I think, this is the behaviour from the new editor.
Try to press "ctrl-K". This gives you the same result as the "[" in the old editor.

The square bracket still works. In edit mode hit [ and wait a sec, it will go grey, then start offering you some page names, web links and search.
If you're linking in the same Confluence, always use [page name] or [space: page name] as that keeps internal links during any migrations.
I also quite like that you can put in [something that does not exist] and you'll get it underlined in red, and it's a reminder to create a new page.

for some reason [ does not work for me, even if I wait. Its just treated as a character. nor does [PageName]. it's just text. This is in the confluence wiki pages when you edit them or create them.

Hmm. Are you sure it's on Cloud? My Cloud installs all happily go grey and pop a box almost immediately. I'm not aware of a way to turn it off in cloud either.

I can confirm this. In my free cloud version, the "[" doesn't work.

D'oh! I just realised I tested with a page created before the new editor was added.
Yes, the [ won't work on new pages created and edited with the new editor, but exactly as you say in your answer - ctrl-k does.
