Recreate a User Space

Deleted a personal space and can't recreate it. Logged in as the user you have a user option Personal Space but no home page. When you look as the site admin there is no personal space entry for this user. If, when logged in as the user, you try and execute http://<host>/spaces/createpersonalspace.action (the Create Personal Space link) you get a notification that the personal space already exists. The same issue has been logged by a user on the end of the https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Setting+Up+your+Personal+Space page.

How do you therefore create a personal space for a user that has deleted their original personal space?
