Slow document download

Miriam August 20, 2025

When a document contains too many images, the download speed is slow and the document content is incomplete.

Hello @Miriam

If I may ask, what do you understand by 'document'? I'm only asking because people frequently refer to Confluence pages as documents.

  • page load times - the number of macros, images, size of images does affect the load time. As with any online SaaS tool, factors like VPNs, firewalls, general traffic, cache, authentication, AND browser plugins (especially content blockers) may play their role
    • example: sometimes, my images do not load on the first attempt. Those are screenshots from retina screens, so they're big with hi-res. I have to refresh the page.
  • Downloading files (documents) attached to the page. In this regard, an attachment is an attachment is an attachment so the download time would not be affect by the what those bytes represent, only by the size of the docs. And is with everything on the internet, sometimes things are fast, sometimes slow.
    • example: the amount of time exporting a space and downloading the file to my computer varies

Try what @Benjamin recomments and if you still observe issues, contacting Atlassian support is the best option. Tip, after you fill in the initial details at https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/ , you will be able to start a conversation with an actual person.

HI @Miriam ,

Welcome. It will depend on the size of the document being downloaded and your network speed. In my experience, even documents with a lots of images is relatively fast. For example, I have downloaded multiple times a PDF or a slide deck attachment that have a bunch of images and it's usually less than a minute or so.

In regards to document incomplete, that's unusual behavior. You may want to report it to Atlassian support to see if there's some underlying issue with your Confluence page, attachments, or the site. In the mean time, try to use a different browser and clear cache to see if it eliminates the behavior you are observing.
