Unresponsive browser when creating a page in Confluence using IE 11 - Web Socket must be enabled

Been recently trying to resolve a problem with not being able to create or edit a page in Confluence using IE 11 after a new Confluence installation.   

• We had diagnosed the problem as only occurring in IE 11 but it worked just find from Firefox browser.

Problem turned out to be that our standard IE11 setup has a security policy to disable Web Sockets.

Turns out this browser feature is required by Confluence for this proper operation.  Though I did not find any documentation stating this requirement.

Posting here in case someone else stumbles into this and wants to avoid thrashing around to figure out what's wrong - as was the case for us. I have come across all sorts of different problems our Users have experienced when they are using Internet Explorer.

The fundamental issue is that advanced wiki tools like Confluence all assume you are using a fully HTML5 compatible browser (which IE is not but Firefox, Chrome ... are) - I don't know whether this "Sockets" thing is related to that but you won't find documentation in Confluence as to why this or that hassle in Confluence is directly due to IE ...

This problem is not an IE limitation per say - I've run into many of those.  

But rather, the default IE configuration for this customer had a security policy that disables the Web Socket object feature.   By default this feature is enabled when you install IE.

Confluence runs fine with the settings turned off - until you try to create or edit a page.  When you click Save or Update, the browser never comes back, forcing you to cancel -and lose any changes

Answer to problem stated above ... enable the Socket object for the browser and back in business.
