Upgrading the confluence 5.0.2 to 6.15 ER

We are planning to upgrade our hosted confluence commercial version 5.0.2 with 6.15 ER. 

Kindly check the following steps and suggest if we need to follow more steps to complete this activity.

1.     Prerequisite:

Currently confluence running on ms-sql 2008 server and we need to migrate confluence DB 2008 to 2016 ms-sql server.

For the Confluence 6.15 ER MS-SQL server should be 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017

1.1.   Roll out plan

• Download the zip file/binaries of the confluence 6.15 ER version from the confluence website.
• Unzip/install the file and setup the confluence home in below file.

$Confluence_Installation_Dir/confluence/WEB-INF/classes/confluence-init.properties

• Configure the database configuration in below file.

$Confluence_Home/confluence.cfg.xml

• Start the confluence and trace the confluence logs for application configuration issues.

$Confluence_Installation_Dir/logs

$Confluence_Home/logs

1.2.    Back out plan

Take the backup of installation directory of old confluence (5.x).

/opt/atlassian/confluence

Take the backup of confluence home directory.

/var/atlassian/application-data/confluence

Take the backup of confluence database.

Note: We will also take a snapshot of confluence app server for back out plan in case of app crash.

Hi,

Upgrading from 5.x to 6.x is a major upgrade and hope you have read all release/upgrade notes before upgrading and it's suggested to upgrade confluence in test env first to avoid or dealt with upgrade related problems.

Your pre-req says to use SQL server 2016 which means I understand you would either upgrade the current 2008 DB server to 2016 with all existing databases or build a brand new SQL server 2016 and restore a copy of your confluence on to it? In both cases, I believe you would need to modify or at-least verify confluence.cfg.xml file for db related changes and save them.  

The upgrade plan should contain, stopping the old confluence instance and backup confluence 5.x home directory, database dump before upgrading and download the confluence 6.x version and then set confluence home directory (i.e /var/atlassian/application-data/confluence) & verify confluence.cfg.xml file for any changes and start the confluence 6.x

You may also want to change the JVM Heap memory parameters as required.

You may also want to check all addon's and their version compatibility before upgrading.

If you have made any custom changes to your confluence, you may need to consider them in latest version also.

Check the log file during the upgrade for any errors or the progress.

Answer to your question: We have already sql-server 2016 hence will migrate data from sql server 2008 to 2016.
