We are importing a 5.8.8 full site backup into 5.9.4 and all appears to work. Is this supported as it seems to work and all appears to look good with no errors following the restore ??

If you are importing that full site in a way to upgrade Confluence, you are not doing the proper steps.
That way, Confluence will not be able to update the database structure from one version to other.
I'd rollback the changes and upgrade Confluence as explained in https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Upgrading+Confluence
