Why don't custom emojis show in the exported PDF files?

Hi guys,

Would you please help me out here? I produce tons of how-tos and manuals monthly using custom emojis due to the explanatory nature of the documents.

None of the custom emojis display correctly in the exported PDF files; they're always in the text form.

Is it a bug or a feature (laughter through tears)?

It's incredibly annoying. What's the point of having the functionality of adding emojis when you can't produce a PDF with them? In my case, they're vital to the proper understanding of the ideas presented in the files.

Is there any workaround for that? Will you, Atlassian guys, fix it any soon?

Cheers!

This is well and truly a bug:

  • The custom emoji are a standard feature of Confluence.
  • Exporting pages from Confluence is a standard feature.
  • Therefore, custom emoji not displaying in exported Confluence pages is a broken feature (AKA a bug).

It is extremely frustrating when we have built dozens of pages around these features then find they don't work when we go to export them.

Hi @Łukasz Król

welcome to the Atlassian Community.

Unfortunately, what you want to achieve is not possible at the moment. You can argue if it's a bug or a missing feature. My colleagues are building the Scroll PDF Exporter which also suffers from this problem. The only thing you can do for now is voting and commenting on the feature request: CONFCLOUD-70166

The only (not so nice) workaround, I see, is not using emojis but using images instead. 😕

Cheers,
Matthias.

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

Let's assume that having a possibility of adding custom emojis is pointless in its current shape. I guess we'll both agree on that.

I noticed that the discussed limitation affects not only Confluence but also Jira.

Scroll PDF Exporter: Wow, I'll certainly give it a try!

The workaround you suggest won't work for me. I need images embedded in the text, not in separate lines.

Thanks anyway, and have a good one!

Luke

Scroll PDF Exporter does not handle custom emojis either. At least I have not found how to render them. Please help!

@rce, unfortunately Atlassian still doesn't provide ways (also not for us app developers) to export the custom emojis.

Please vote on the corresponding feature request and let Atlassian know.
