Why is Confluence 3.5.16 prompting me to install Google Gears?

David A June 25, 2012

Hi

We have just upgraded to Confluence 3.5.16. I am testing it with IE9. When I try to drag 'n drop an attachment to a page, Confluence prompts me with:

"To enable drag-and-drop, you need to install Google Gears. Confluence has detected that you do not have it installed. Would you like to proceed to the website to install it now?"

I understood that Google Gears was deprecated in Confluence 3.5 and that drag 'n drop should work through Html5.

Please can anyone explain this?

David

Some themes do not support HTML5 (https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONF35/Using+Drag-and-Drop+in+Confluence)

Maybe you use one of them ?

Hi David,

The Google Gears requirement is browser dependent rather than Confluence version dependent. Have a look at https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Using+Drag-and-Drop+in+Confluence for details, basically Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4 don't support HTML drag and drop and therefore require Google Gears.

Hope that helps?

Andrew.

Well it sort of helps ;-)

Google Gears is no longer available. So the answer, I guess, is that drag and drop is not supported by Confluence for IE9.
