trying to get notified in hip chat if someone added something to the calendar
You may want to give this app a try https://github.com/drnushooz/hipchatbuddy. I had same problem with HipChat and needed to create a standalone integration with Google Calendar to automatically change my status based on meeting. Feel free to file bug/feature requests and I will be happy to fix them .
There is a HipChat integration that you could install into your HipChat rooms to integrate with Google Calendar

Well, there's a HipChat REST API and an undocumented Team Calendars REST API, so you could do some polling (a Cron Job should suffice) and that should do the job.

Currently, there is no feature to integrate HipChat with Team Calendars that is available in Confluence however it is possible to integrate HipChat with Google Calendar but we do not support the official integration, it is supported by third-party vendor, Zapier. You can check this out for details: https://zapier.com/zapbook/google-calendar/hipchat/
