Sticky heading row in tables and table borders

I have a complex table that has three heading rows with some cells merged in the heading to go over certain columns (see picture) and the table is very long.  The sticky headers does not seem to work (it is embedded in a page that goes on for many pages when printed).  I cannot get the sticky header to work.  I would also like to make heavier weights to the borders of some columns to set it off.  What am I doing wrong?  Also, how do I add colors that are not shown on the color icon - I would like varying shades of gray and blue rather than green.

The sticky header only works for real header rows. If you convert the row to a normal row and then give it a background color and bold the text then that functionality turns off.

Well I tried that to start with and when I scroll, the header does not stay there, just scrolls to other rows.

Based on your image above and the fact that you have merged cells that means your top row in not a header row. The header row is very limited. It only allows for one row with no merged cells. Once you merge cells it no longer works that way. Also, if you embed a table inside the header row that will also turn off the sticky table functionality. If I recall right even having row cells merged will turn it off. So, it really has to be a simple table with normal columns and rows and no merges.

What I am saying is that even with a simple table with two columns and no merged cells, the sticky header function does not work.  

Is there any way to create a more complex table in Confluence like embedding Excell somehow and still getting tracked changes?

What version of Confluence are you one? The sticky headers was added in 5.8.

As for doing this with a more complex table like you have without resorting to an add-on or something like embedding a Google Sheets doc there really isn't a way to do it.
