I am trying to start Confluence test env. it gives error in browser - HTTP Status 404
Please help in resolving this issue.
Also, what is better way to upgrade Confluence from 3.1 to 5.3 Do I need to upgarde on some other version and then to 5.3.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/upgrading-confluence-4578.html gives upgrade path from 3.1 to 5.3.
According to that, you'll need to do something like:
3.1 > 3.5.17 > 5.0.3 > 5.3
