I'm upgrading confluence from 5.3.4 to 6.+. I'm currently running on Win 2007. I have a new win 2016 server 64bit.
Is it possible to install a new version of 5.3.4 on the new server, and point it to a copy of the 5.3.4 DB which is SQL, Bring up confluence on the new server locally? Once up then run the upgrade on the new server from 5.3.4 to 6.+?
Hello Michael,
This should all be possible. You should follow Migrating Confluence Between Servers doc,
https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/migrating-confluence-between-servers-184150.html
Basically it will involve installing a fresh version of confluence and moving your home directory.
Just make sure you shut down the old instance first, and don't start it again. You don't want to instances looking at the database.
Hi Michael,
Thanks for reaching out to the forum while you are still in the planning stage. Hopefully that will help avoid surprises during the upgrade. :)
In order to move your Confluence 5.3.4 instance to the new server you would need to copy your Confluence home directory from the old instance in addition to pointing the new installation at a copy of the Confluence db. Installing a new instance will create a new Confluence Installation directory, with all default configuration, so for example, if you did any memory tuning or are running SSL defined in the server.xml, then those settings would be lost.
Please follow these documents to copy the existing instance and then upgrade:
Restoring a Test Instance from Production (doc for Confluence 5.3.x)
I look forward to hearing how it goes.
Thanks,
Ann
