Upgrading from 8.5.x to 9.2.x

Pierre Rochefort July 14, 2025

Hi,

Our version of Confluence is coming to EOL at the dn of August and we are planning to migrate to 9.2.x series which is hte latest LTS version.

Has anyone tried this upgrade and has it been a smooth transition?

The version jump seems quite big and I don't really have a DEV instance to test this in great details.

Any information you have would be really useful.

Tahnk you

Pierre

Hi @Pierre Rochefort

This is a fairly straight forward upgrade.  I haven't had any issues.  I do recommend getting a dev environment, tho.

One question: If I make a backup of my site and try to do a restore of my 8.5.x site to the 9.2.x directly, would this be an issue? If it is, I will change my process and update first to 9.2.x and then make a backup to restore to the same instance. I am just trying to do this in as few steps as possible. (I am actually migrating to a new machine and that machine will likely already be at the 9.2.x version by the time I am ready to migrate).

Thanks

I wouldn't try to restore a backup to a different version.  You may get away with it, however I wouldn't trust this, especially if you don't have a dev server to test it on.

I'd make backups before and after the upgrade and the server move, but I like backups :)
