Using Jira user server from OnDemand 25 user license with downloaded Confluence with starter 10 user license

Hi,

I have a thread on this with Atlassian support as well but it seems to be going nowhere so far.

I am looking to buy a new Jira onDemand 25 user license as we have hit our 10 user threshold with our current Jira starter license. We would like to only buy an upgraded license for Jira to accommodate new users and to import our Jira database to the OnDemand version.

We would then like for Confluence to stay as a downloaded version. Problem is, Confluence is using the Jira user database for authentication and we don't want to upgrade Confluence.

- Can a Confluence starter version use the Jira user database from a superior Jira license or would that necessitate that Confluence get upgraded as well.

- If we can't get Confluence to use the Jira user database unless Confluence is upgraded to the 25 user version as well, how can we least interrupt Confluence while making use our current users can still authenticate?

Hi Charles,

It looks like there are a few issues with this approach. The first is that starter licenses cannot be upgraded, you would need to purchase a new license at the 25-user tier if you wanted to upgrade your download version to support 25 users.

Also, note that OnDemand is not a license, it is a subscription, so you can check out the pricing and details at https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/ondemand. Moving to JIRA OnDemand is a brand new instance, and you can do a full system export/import from your current download instance that would import all of your users and data.

However, you cannot share the userbase between OnDemand and download. To do so, you would have to also migrate your Confluence data to the same OnDemand instance, which would be the most direct move for you.

So essentially I would need to buy a OnDemand license for Confluence as well?

That was what I was afraid would need to happen but dreaded pitching the higher cost to management.

2 more questions:

- Do you know if the Go2Group SynapseRT plugin is available in the Jira OnDemand version? It doesn't seem to be available

- If we would want to integrate Bamboo with Jira in regards to builds and issues, would we need a new license for Bamboo as well even though Bamboo has its own user database?

Just to be clear is it true that Atlassian starter licenses cannot be upgraded to the current product version unless it is a commercial license?

No, not sure where you might have heard that one.

A starter licence is simply 10 users.  The version is mostly irrelevant.  For Jira, the key will work from the last time the format was changed (Jira 4.0) through to the current version.  Similarly, Confluence I think changed at version 3.0 (It's been a long time, my memory is not great). 

If you want to increase the licence numbers, just get the tier you need.
