When I link to. Word .doc file it opens as pdf and the formating is bad. How do I get it to open in

Downloading it works fine but it would be preferable for it to open as a word document. Yes, word is on everyone's computer.  Thanks

Welcome to Atlassian community. 

Try adding the Office word macro to the page. Then it should give you a better view.

I am assuming that you are referencing viewing the Word document in Confluence.  The rendering that occurs on that is not always perfect.  If it is not rending it properly you will have to download it to view how it really looks.
