When, during upgrade, should Java be re-installed?

We are currently running Confluence 5.5.2 on Java 1.7. When we upgrade to 6.0.1 soon, we will have to switch to Java 1.8.

At what point in the upgrade path process should we install Java 1.8?

Will 6.0.1 immediately look for 1.8, or will we have to re-configure something in order for 6.0.1 to use Java 1.8?

The process that is Confluence 6.x should be using Java 1.8. Whether it comes from an installer or you install the JDK yourself.

Chris, if you're using the Confluence Linux 64 Bit, that IS the installer. You can't run EXE's on Linux so that's a moot point, but the Linux 64 Bit is a script that sets up your dependencies and includes JAVA. If you use the Linux 64 Bit installer then you can safely ignore steps related to upgrading JAVA.

If you're installing with the tar archive, then you WILL need to take down Confluence, upgrade JAVA_HOME, then run Confluence from the new installation directory.

Steve, our OS is Linux for current install (Confluence 5.5.2), and will remain Linux when we upgrade to 6.0.1. We'll be using either Confluence Linux 64 Bit, or TAR.GZ Archive to upgrade, not the EXE installer.

Then, from your answer, we'll have to install 1.8 before the upgrade, and then update the JAVA_HOME path. My follow-up question is, should we update JAVA_HOME before, or after running the upgrade? I'm thinking it doesn't really matter, as long as we update the path before starting up the app again...

How are you setting up and installing the app? What OS?

If it's with the Installer package, you shouldn't need to manage JAVA by yourself. If it's via the Archive/Zip/Tar method, then you WILL need to update java and update the JAVA_HOME path.

If you're using the Confluence installer, you do not need to install Java manually.
