Why is my table being added at the top of the page instead of where the cursor is?

Part way through a document, when I insert a table, the table is created at the top of the page instead of where my cursor is. Why is this happening, and more critically, how can I stop it? On the plus side, planning the tables from end to beginning has improved my planning skills...
