Why would we get a MySQL repeatable-read no longer supported error when upgrading from 6.15 to 7.5?

We tried upgrading this past weekend from Confluence 6.15.7 to 7.5.2 using the 7.5.2 download. We got an error that repeatable-read for MySQL was no longer supported. But we have version 6.15.7 configured with the appropriate property in our confluence.cfg.xml file. And this setting could still be seen in the config file. Why would 7.5.2 complain about this? We had to go back to 6.15 which looked like it was fine. But I discovered our collaborative editing feature was broken, which took some time resolving.
