Currently, I am having to copy paste Word file content into Confluence. I am not sure if Confluence searches for content within a Word file that has been uploaded as an attachment. Does it?

Yes, you should be able to find the phrases if you attached the document. Confluence will index and search the full-content the of following type of attachments:
