Plugins can expire and still 'work', at least for the time being. That is, the current version of the plugin can be 'valid' for the version of Confluence it is currently associated with.
Of course, when plugin licenses expire you are no longer entitled to upgrades or technical support for that plugin. So if you have an expired license plugin that works now, but then you upgrade Confluence and it breaks all or part of the plugin, you are stuck until you upgrade. If/when you decide to upgrade, you will be able to download and install a compatible version of the plugin.
