how can I turn off preview?

I really really really really really really really really really want to turn off preview, for my user account, without admin rights (I don't have those).

How can I do this.

Preferrably, I could turn that misfeature off for all file types at once.

As a user, you should be able to right click and choose to download the attachments.

To disable the preview functionality for the whole instance, you do need to have admin permissions, as described in: Disable document file preview 

There is a request open to make the preview feature more configurable - I edited it to include a user profile setting so admin permissions would not be necessary: Selectively Disable Attachment Preview. You may communicate directly with the development team by commenting on that ticket if you like.
