how to remove the editing toolbar from all pages

Maddy Knuth July 9, 2014

I'd like to remove the editing toolbar that appears when you edit a wiki page. Is that possible?

A lot of people find the toolbar useful, so I'm not sure why you'd want to do this.

However, if you look to the top left of the edit area, there's a button for toggling the stuff surrounding the main edit box, that hides and shows the toolbar. Would that be good enough for your users? You do get a lot more editing space when you use it!

We don't want users to create extra styles by using the buttons on the toolbar. We want them to use the styles we're creating.

I don't see a toggle button, unless you mean the one that removes the header? This is what I see:

Yes, the little two-up-arrows next to the magnifying glass is what I was talking about.

I'm not sure what you mean by "extra styles" - all the toolbar has is standard text editing stuff for laying out and formatting text and access to macros. What do you mean by "style"?

I've styled our wiki using a stylesheet (CSS), and we only want users to use those styles. When you apply formatting from the toolbar, it formats the text without using those styles. So we were thinking of removing the toolbar. I thought you could do that by editing the layout, but I can't figure out which element in the layout to remove.

Not really, it's an integral part of the editor, you'd need to hack the core editor code to remove it.

Furthermore, it's pointless. The toolbar is a convenience, but you can enter formatting without using it at all.

I think you need to deal with all their formatting in your css.
