I use Dropbox extensively. It used to be that if I pasted in a Dropbox link (to any file type), it would turn into a smart link. Lately, it has quit doing this, it just appears as a basic link (only option is "edit link"). I would REALLY like to have the smart links working.
I have discovered the new(ish) /dropbox macro. Even if I use this macro, the resulting link is an inline link and is NOT a smart link.
@Robert Palmer I remember seeing something like this recently. I found that, if I selected Edit Link, I was then given the toolbar with the options for how to display the link—almost like it became a 2-step process. Do you see this if you select Edit Link?
I don't recall if it was only when I tried to link to something outside of Confluence.
No, I don't see this. If I select "Edit Link" I only get the pop-up with the URL and an option to type in the text to display (this is the same as it has always been)

An inline link is still a smart link.

Why would you use a dropbox macro, just paste the link, as also mentioned by @Cyrille Martin

I beg to differ with you. Inline links are not smart links.
Very interesting on the Smart-Links-just-got-smarter article. That would be wonderful, IF the link appeared as such.
I only used the "dropbox macro" to TEST if it behaved differently than just pasting in the link. It does not - and it's a MUCH slower way to work. I generally do NOT use the dropbox macro. I generally use this workflow:
1. from the Finder, right click on the file of interest and select "Copy Dropbox Link..."
2. in Confluence, Command-V paste in the Link
This USED to work and convert to a smart link. Now it is just showing as an inline link
(in this case, a link to another Confluence page)
Hover cursor over link to get pop-up meu
Single click on link to display pop-up menu
Hover cursor over link to get pop-up additional information
Single click on link to display pop-up menu

"Authentication for Smart Links
You must be logged in to non-Atlassian products that require authentication before you can display the Smart Link in your page. You’ll only need to do this once, and that product’s links will work across all of Atlassian Cloud.
For links to non-Atlassian product that requires access to view, readers need to be logged in for Smart Links to display in the correct view."
Can you try another browser or incognito window. Could be cookie or history related.

Yes, I thought that might be the case. So I checked and I am logged in to Dropbox. Unfortunately, unlike many other tools that have explicit selections in the settings, I could not find anywhere in Confluence / Atlassian settings to setup and/or reset the connection.
Yes, I saw that link - but those two sentences do not explain how the connection works, how to set it up, how to reset it, etc.
Your suggestion is good regarding trying another browser or incognito window. I will test that. Thank you,

Via you profile picture, use the Manage Account option and then check the Connected Apps section.
Or from Dropbox side, https://help.dropbox.com/integrations/third-party-apps

Great! I was able to Revoke the Dropbox setting - now I need to figure out how to restore it.
I tested in a different browser:
- logged in to atlassian
- click on a dropbox link -> new window opens with login page
- entered my dropbox login information
- saw the file
- nothing changed on the Atlassian side.
I'm now trying to figure out how to re-connect

It could be that Dropbox links do not function well being a smart link.
Then the issue is did something change and on which side, Atlassian or Dropbox?
I would recommend to 1st then raise an issue at Atlassian Support

You mean that when you are pasting the link to a Dropbox file you don't have this rendering ?

Correct, when I paste a link to a Dropbox file I get the full URL appear, in blue and underlined as an active link.
If I paste a Confluence link, I get the above view
