How to encrypt database password for Crowd

While we've been able to encrypt the database password for Jira, it seems that those instructions do not work for Crowd. Does anyone know how to encypt (obfuscate, really) the password in the var/crowd_home/shared/crowd.cfg.xml file?

It is not possible to encrypt the database password listed in <Crowd-Home>/crowd.cfg.xml file.
