Try out the new Colored Options in Team Managed Projects’ (TMP) Dropdown Field 🎨

Hi Jira Community,

I’m excited to share that our team has been working on a new experiment to make it easier for you to scan work - TMP Colorful Dropdown Fields!

What’s changing?

We’re introducing the ability to add color to Options in Dropdown fields in team-managed Projects(TMP) in Jira and Jira Service Management (JSM) projects. This means admins can now assign colors to options in Dropdown fields, making it easier for everyone to visually distinguish important information at a glance.

Why are we doing this?

We’ve heard from many business teams that Jira can feel overwhelming, especially with so many fields on each issue. By adding color, we will:

  • Reduce cognitive load by making each option stand out.

  • Bridge the gap for Trello users moving to Jira, since Trello already supports colored labels.

  • Make Jira more intuitive and approachable by making it more colorful.

Who benefits from this change?

  • Business teams who want a simpler, more visual way to organize and update issues.

  • Admins who want to highlight important options in TMP Dropdown fields for their teams.

  • Anyone who prefers a more colorful, engaging Jira experience!

What you need to know

  • Project admins can configure colors for Dropdown field options in Team Managed Projects. This can be done either in the Work item view, Work types page in Project settings, or the Fields Page in Project Settings.

  • Existing options will default to grey; new options get a random color, which is configurable.

  • No action needed for end users, just enjoy the visual refresh!

How can you help?

We’d love your feedback! Try out the new colorful Dropdown field and let us know:

  • Does color help you find and update options more easily?
  • What other fields would you like to see get the color treatment?

Feel free to comment below or reach out directly with your thoughts.

Thanks,
The Jira Product Team

That is a nice addition for fields! Can we expect this to become available for company managed projects as well? We have teams across both project types (and are transitioning more to company managed). We could make some company managed teams very happy with this.

I'd also be interested in seeing this rolled out to company managed project, as we hardly use team-managed ones.

@Madhusudhan Kadaraiah can you advise if this in on the roadmap please?

Making data easy to recognize without actually reading the options is a great step! Well done.

Does anyone use Team-managed projects? We migrated all of ours to Company-managed a long time ago. Great feature, wrong type of project!

Will the colors be available through the field APIs?

Will this feature eventually be available for Company-managed projects? We do not use Team-managed projects; our users would love this functionality.

I really hope this comes to company managed projects soon like others have stated. But I also wanted to remind everyone concerned about visualization that Jira supports emojis in practically every place including summaries, fields, and statuses in workflows. In JSM you can use them in queue titles and automation titles as well. If you are unsure how to add them, on a Windows computer just press the windows key plus the period key to bring up the chooser.

I'm not saying you SHOULD use a poo emoji for a workflow status, but you could. 👀

This is a good start, but one question. Why didn't you just take the UI from JPD and apply it here as well? No offense intended, but component look horrendous in comparison to JPD.
