Atlassian’s Data Center Phase-Out—Will This Increase Demand for Cloud Migration Experts?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to spark a discussion around Atlassian’s recent announcement about the fate of their Data Center offerings under the Atlassian Ascend initiative.

Key takeaways:

  • Data Center products are being phased out through a multi-year timeline:

    • December 16, 2025: No new Marketplace app submissions for Data Center.

    • March 30, 2026: New customers can no longer purchase Data Center licenses.

    • March 30, 2028: Existing customers won’t be able to extend or expand Data Center licenses.

    • March 28, 2029: Official end-of-life subscriptions expire, support and updates cease.

Atlassian is supporting this transition through their Ascend program, which includes phased support, migration resources, and extended maintenance (by exception) for eligible customers past the 2029 deadline

My question to the community,
1. Do you expect a surge in demand for cloud migration experts consultants, in-house specialists, or vendors , as organizations plan and execute this transition?

2. Or do you feel companies were already moving toward cloud-first strategies before this announcement, making this move feel like a continuation rather than a turning point?

It’d be great to hear your insights on:

  • Whether your organization is responding proactively or waiting because of this timeline.

  • If you're seeing a spike in requests for migration expertise from clients or peers.

  • What role Atlassian partners or consulting services might play in this shift.

Looking forward to hearing your perspectives.

3. What about government organizations and banks that don't want to risk their sensitive data leaks through the cloud they don't control? Should they consider migrating to another product, e.g. Zendesk or Youtrack? Atlassian will loose billions.

I guess Atlassian should make datacenter opensource and allow community to develop it further.

I personally don't think it's good idea. Those big enterprises are going to hate it.

Google did it with Chrome and both versions coexist - Chrome and Chromium
