Backup for server is being discontinued

Hi there,

Today we discoverd the following "announcement" of a change in Jira cloud:

Backup for server is being discontinued starting November 30, 2024

Instead, you can use the CSV file import wizard to move your data from Cloud to Data Center. This option supports data such as issue data, users, and project types.

This comes as a complete suprise to us as a customer.

Can anyone direct me to more information.

We have the luxury of running DC and Cloud and, since there is no good means of back-up in cloud, make our own back-ups and restore them in DC.

Any opinions on this Atlassian "announcement"?

Krgds!

Official communication around this topic kindly doesn't exist...

My instances at least show a changed date at the moment: Backup for server is being discontinued starting June 30, 2025

I'll can only guess on the reasoning but the feature drift and changing established concepts that existed for years is a challenge when you want create a backup file that someone can restore in another platform (Server / Data Center).

If you ever try to restore an XML backup of Jira & Confluence you will have a lot of fun when you discover how many things you need to change / modify to make this usable. Keeping XML backups working for DC is for sure not part of the definition of done on any feature that gets implemented.

But anyway, the suggestion on the discontinued XML backup is using CSV. In Data Center you can simply enable JSON import / export. So enabling JSON exports from the issue navigator that can be consumed by the external system import JSON import would be a proper suggesting. Ignoring the amount of issues that you can export and also missing attachments.
