Hello Atlassian Support Team,

We are facing an issue in Jira Product Discovery where we need to send an automated email notification to a user stored in a custom user-type field.

However, the system does not allow selecting this field in the "To" section when configuring an email automation rule.

Attempts to use Smart Values such as:

- {{issue.customUserField.emailAddress}}

- {{issue.customUserField}}

have failed, as Jira does not return the email address.

Key details:

- The field is a standard **User field** in Jira Discovery.

- The email addresses of users are available in User Management but cannot be accessed through Automation.

- Another standard **User field** (e.g., Assignee) works fine for email sending, but this one is not listed as an option.

We need a way to send an email directly to the user stored in this field. Could you confirm if this is a known limitation? Is there an alternative method to retrieve the email address or allow this field as a recipient?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards, Alex

Hi @Aliaksandr Ropat -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Jira Product Discovery (JPD) seems to be based on team-managed projects (JPD), and "people" fields in those do not provide the email address to rules.  Here is the "suggestion" to fix that defect: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/AUTO-519

Unfortunately, the workaround for TMP will not work for JPD as global / company-managed user-picker fields cannot be added to JPD projects.

The other possible workaround is to use the Send Web Request action to call the REST API endpoint to get the user's data, including the email Address.  Please let me know if you want more details on how to do that.

Kind regards,
Bill
