Hello! We just started our Jira PD Premium trial, and we're loving its potential. We've run into one potential deal-breaker in converting beyond our trial, so I wanted to see if I'm just missing a solution here, and if not, whether this is a feature gap that can be mitigated.
The issue we've encountered is the limited flexibility in defining the group by column summary values when Grouping by.
Our use case:
- We have 2 issue types (Opportunities and Ideas) that are connected
- We have a view where we group by opportunities to show the idea within them
- We track project status (see field example below) at the idea level
- We want to be able to aggregate the project status to the Opportunity group by row, too, in the same view
- But the existing options don't provide a meaningful, high signal of the overall status at the Group By level.
- Count, Empty, Filled don't tell you much
- Average, Median have limitations:
- Field values can't be excluded, even if empty, they're applied
- You can't classify the resulting value for a high-signal aggregate (e.g., 3.7 = "At Risk")
Are there known/planned solutions for this?
The only 2 we'e thought of so far are less than ideal:
- Return a weighted value (e.g., 3.7) and define a value range | key in the field description. This doesn't really work because all stakeholders would have to know they:
- Should hover over the field description to see the value range | key
- Memorize the value range | key
- Create a separate view (non-group by) just of Opportunities to show status at that level (either based on manual field input or automated calculation based on Ideas connections)
- Nullifies the value of hierarchies and being able to see layered signal in 1 view
I'm sure there are other options, but some of the ones we thought could help here:
- Enable a "Select Group by Issue field" to populate the group by column summary
- Users classify project status in the Opportunity (either manually or using automation when looking at the connected Ideas), and that is returned in the column summary
- Make the weighting options more agile (e.g., ability to define a range of values + corresponding value to return when using avg & median, etc.)
- Enable the ability for the Group by column summary row cell value to be manually populated (or by formula, automation, etc.)
- Enable the ability to group by column summary for the Delivery Progress and Delivery Status fields
I really appreciate any insight. We really want to make Premium our new plan, but this might be our biggest hurdle so far. Thank you!
