Introducing the summary view in Jira software projects

Hi @Lisa , The new widget seems promising.  Does this widget only apply to one project overview? We currently use multiple projects to see the overall development activity. Will there be an option to include multiple projects or all projects?

What is the plan and status for the JIRA Roadmap widget? Is there a plan to have a similar feature for tracking the release plans/schedules?

Thanks,

Kent

Noticing on some instances - it's not yet available. Are we still in a roll out phase?

Hi @Andrew Pawl , feel free to email me your instance name at lsutherland@atlassian.com and I can investigate this for you.

Hi @Kent Chiu

Currently, the summary view feature is designed for a single project overview. However, if you're on a premium license, you can use the Plans feature, which allows you to view
summary information across multiple projects.

The Jira Roadmap widget operates independently from the summary view in projects. I'd recommend keeping an eye on the community post for future announcements or updates related to this.

I do not see this as helpful for our Jira projects but only adding confusion.  Our Jira projects are not nature terminal, they are a stream of continuous on-going efforts and contain multiple pockets of work in which a summary view for each is needed.  We spend countless hours trying to create that on a continous basis since this application does not do that.   A summary view our our Jira project in-its-self, provides zero value.

If you can filter the data and create multiple summary views, one for each of those pockets of work, THAT would be valuable.

Hi, is it possible for us to apply 'filters' to the summary view? We have 4 squads all working on the same Jira project, and we run out ceremonies independently.  So getting the full project view isn't much good for us, we'd need to apply a filter on 'Team'.

Thanks

Simon

Hi @Lisa

The new "Summary" view in Jira Software is very useful, but we would like the ability to customize it for our needs. Specifically, we want to:

  • Add/Remove/Rename widgets/metrics.
  • Customize filters or data sources.
  • Have the option to hide the irrelevant cards

Could you let us know if customization is planned? If not, we’d like to request it as a new feature.

Hi Lisa, I'm exploring this and noticed that the 4 summary widgets are pre-set to the past 7 days (I agree, ability to filter on specific dates would help). That said, the status overview and other breakdowns do not specify any date range the data is applicable for or how they are pulled. I tried digging into the list views, but I'm not certain how this logic is applied and if it is uniform across everything. Can you please clarify? FWIW, having this "past x days" or something would be very helpful on all widgets.

This a nice modernization over the older summary screen, and provides a good place to start for newer teams. Yet I would have preferred that Atlassian had invested in improving the existing dashboards features prior to this feature.  As it stands, this re-design of the summary screen provides zero value and just causes confusion due to how we are using Jira. I had to disable it in our main project.

I can't think of a use-case in my 20 years of using the product where a Custom Dashboard hasn't been needed over an OOTB summary screen. Yet, dashboards and gadgets seem to be abandoned when it comes to investment.  Having recently used ServiceNow, and Monday.com, Jira's dashboarding features are starting to look like 2000 era software that hasn't kept up to date with its peers.

Hi,

It looks like we can set a date range other than 7 days from what I can see here but I don't seem to be able to find the path described to achieve it, possibly the delay in rollout to all instances?

Moved our IT Team from a JS project to a JWM Project to really get in there and kick the tires. We discovered these metrics there and really liked them. Unfortunately we jumped backed into JS due to the fact that it's under-pinnings are better off for Sprints and so on. So too see these metrics now available in JS is fantastic - hope they cross over to JSM as well.

That said, I have a few clients who are not seeing this as of now.  I know it's rolling but are there any restrictions in terms of licensing where this would not be seen?

BTW - love the velocity of features coming out of Atlassian! Really an exciting time to be an admin as well as any IT leader who can really use more of JIRA and Confluence to bring valuable metrics into the room!

What is the view of the screenshot? Is that the new home page when you click on the Jira logo?

@Lisa - Question regarding the "Status overview" window on the Summary page.  The Status values listed are not in line with the Status values from the Workflow for the project.  For example "Open" is listed  on the Pie Chart but is not available in the project.  Where does this "widget" pull the Status values from?2025-02-03_13-03-08.jpg2025-02-03_13-01-24.jpg

It would be really useful to be able to see this at Epic level because these often sit across multiple teams,  giving a great view of the bigger pieces of value flowing through the system...

Hello there, I am really new in Jira. I am looking for this feature but I don't know how to activate it. I navigated to Project Settings > Features > but don't find the option of summary. Is it a payed feature? I would love to have it in my new projects.

Hi, @Lisa
The summary function looks great! I have a question, why don't I have access to it in my Plans?

I really like this overview and I use it very often. It is a great addition to Jira Software projects. Especially as many users aren't familiar with creating filters and dashboards to get an overview of what is going on in Jira, such an overview provides those insights out of the box.

However, what I still miss is such an overview for all your Jira projects in one place. There is just a list with all projects you have access to, but no further insights. This inspired us to build the app Projects Insight Edge during the last edition of the Codegeist hackathon. If something like this would be provided out of the box somewhere in the future, would also be great for users who don't want to get another app for that requirement.

This feature works fine on single-instance projects. I have a few projects with boards using filters from multiple projects, where the summary feature is useless.

Replicating the summary functionality is dashboards for these use-cases is doable (to some extend at least), but you run into limited layout options in dashboards which makes it rather useless. So for now I have to explore emulating this in Excel using the available plugins and widgets there.

So what I would like, in additon to previous mentioned options, is the option to control the source of the Summary to be a filter rather the project itself.

I am on standard Jira and there is no business case for us upgrade to Premium to get plans where this perhaps is available.

April Update

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your feedback and comments to date! I'm excited to share that we've started to rollout filters on the summary view. Unless you're on release tracks, you should have access to the filters by the end of April.

To filter the data in your summary:

  1. Select Filter.

  2. Choose a filter and select the data you want to see.

You can filter by the following:

  • Date range - view data for all the work items that were created, updated, or due within a particular time period.

  • Assignee - view data for all the work items that are assigned to one or more particular people (or unassigned).

  • Work type - view data for one or more particular work types.

  • Status - view data for all the work items that are in a particular status.

  • Parent - view all summary data for work items that belong to one or more selected parent work items.

  • Priority - view all summary data for work items that have been assigned a particular priority

Please feel free to share any additional feedback or comments here.

Hi @ehuiza

This should now be resolved and you should have access to the summary view on software projects. Please let me know if this isn't the case at lsutherland@atlassian.com and I can follow it up.

Hi @Esteban this change is related to Jira Cloud only. From your screenshot it looks like you might be on Jira Software Data Centre which does not have this same view.

Hi @David Tieman apologies for the delay in response on this one. That's not I'd expect to see, is this a CMP project with multiple boards?

@Lisa This is seen on most of the boards including a board that is only listing data from 1 project.  It is possible that with our current workflows we could have some mismatches on this summary view similar to what we occasionally see with the board configuration and statuses.  I will share this with our Admin/Support team to determine if it's something we can address internally.

Adding a request for the Design of the Summary view, for this Pie Chart, allow the selection of the Statuses to be displayed vs. all Statuses by Default.  This would be good on the Dashboard too !

Thank you
