It’s now easier to configure fields for child issues

Hi Jira Community,

We’ve made it easier to keep on top of your work by introducing configurable fields for child issues to the issue view.

What’s changing?

From the issue view, you can now:

  • Customize fields: Choose which fields you want to see for your child issues and we’ll save your configuration for the same issue types in your project.

  • Edit fields: Update fields for child issues without having to navigate to each child issue.

  • Sort fields: Sort your child issues so you can find what you need faster.

    Screenshot 2025-03-06 at 9.09.52 AM.png

Why are we making this change?

We’ve consistently received feedback that users want to configure child issues within the issue view, so they don’t need to navigate to each child issue to view and edit them.

What do you need to do?

We’ve started rolling out these changes.

Once you’ve tried configuring fields, we’d love to hear your feedback! Let us know in the comments what’s working and what we can improve.

Thanks from the Atlassian team

Hello! While I do appreciate Attlasian listening to feedback and I'm sure hard work went into this, for my team and I this change is terrible - you can't event assign someone to the task if there are only 2-3 child issues, because the list of people to assign is hidden by the border.  We thought/hoped that this change was a bug. It feels hacky and unpolished. Please take it back or make it optional.

On another note, it would be great if someone could look at bigger impact issues, such as this one that's impacting 163 of your customers to this day:

Is this for new navigation only? I'm not seeing this view of child issues as a table on my Epics or other parents issues. We are on the old navigation currently.

@Ahmud Auleear  Question, once customized, is this a default for all projects? Or is it specific to each issue type? Is there a document I can reference?

I have an issue where the child tasks from this table are opened in a new tab and it is very annoying and slows down my team's work significantly. Please can it be changed so child tasks open in a centre or side view like before.

This change does provide some benefits when viewing issues in the child panel. However, the change removed the ability to open the child issues in the center of the same tab. So now when you click on a child issue it opens in a new tab. This is a step backward for the child issue panel. Here's a feature request to restore the functionality of opening an issue in the center of the same tab. Please vote if you agree the functionality should be restored.

@Sunelle Delport  After you click the link, you may need to log in by clicking the log in button in the top right corner. You should then be able to click on "Vote for this issue". Hope this helps!Screenshot 2025-03-12 at 9.50.54 AM.png

When trying to assign someone to a child issue, the list of potential assignees is hidden by the UI - this means that for each subtask I must navigate in a separate window to assign. Very unfriendly UI - please fix or revert to the old experience. This is slowing our team down.Screenshot 2025-03-13 at 10.48.23.png

@Ciprian Simu  the fix for your issue is simple scroll over the column end the <-> symbol will appear and you can adjust so the assignee fits on the screen and then it will save your view for future:

@ConnXpert I understand your frustration. The new window view works and as a workaround you can press the back button in the browser to go back to the previous page.

Perhaps they need to allow an option to open within the same middle view and a new page view - I guess they could manipulate clicking the key does one thing and clicking the summary does another.

@Zaboor Hussain I believe the issue I highlighted is not clear. I'm not interested in resizing the window horizontally, the problem I'm facing is on the vertical axis.

To repro:

1. Create new task

2. Add 1 or 2 subtasks

3. Try to assign someone to them

Hi together,

is there a way that a project admin or a system admin can define a default set of fields shown in the Children Panel?

As far as i have tested, each and every one of my users have to configure the panel by themself.

As for most developer this is a nice feature, we have a lot of business-projects in which most users are not able or not willing to configure each and every one of the Children Panels for each issue type and each project. They either expect in an enterprise environment to get proper configured views in the first place.

Hi everyone,

for our teams this is a real benefit. Unfortunately, the columns need to be added for each individual task and each user has to do it by himself.

We would appreciate, if the users could set their own default configuration, so the same columns are shown in every issue depending on the logged in user or a project based default setting, that can be managed by the project administrator.

Do we know what the change window is for this update? as not all features have been pushed out yet?

I just got the update on my org, thanks for the hard work!

I have a question regarding time estimate fields. I can add the field "Original Estimate" but there is no way for me to edit it, which is making the addition of the field on the view only informative, where it would really help if we were able to edit it from that view and not have to enter each subtask to add the time estimates, which is what I was hoping this new feature will be able to provide. Is that something that you are looking to implement?

Thank you @Ahmud Auleear

My feedback would be the same like @Marvin Röger

We would appreciate, if the users could set their own default configuration, so the same columns are shown in every issue depending on the logged in user or a project based default setting, that can be managed by the project administrator.

Hello, nice update! But is there an option to switch back to the old view? You can’t just surprise users with such changes.

Looking forward to integrate these changes!

one important question for us though.

does the table view include total row?

in the example story points are shown, will it include a total story points at the bottom?

My team is enjoying this update and being able to add fields. However, when we add the "Goals" field that ties into our Goals from Atlassian Home, the field comes back blank and it can't be edited (even though the child issues have goals filled out). This is the case across all our projects.

Is this a bug or just a field that hasn't been rolled out yet with this feature? Screenshot 2025-04-14 at 7.37.48 AM.png

Is there a way to switch between progress bars? The new one in the child fields seems overly complex - I'd really like the option to choose between the new one and the old single bar with colour-codes for time completed.

So similar to this was my preference, showing scheduled time, time spent and time exceeded in one simple bar:

prog bar old.png

And this new one, which has scheduled time on the top bar, then a lower bar showing time spent, which seems over-engineered:
