Simplified All Work view: one unified column to rule them all

Hi there,

I'm Tanya Maddalena, Product Manager in Jira.  We're making it easier to scan and manage your work in Jira's All Work tab by merging multiple fields into one streamlined column.

Until now, the All Work tab displayed individual columns for the hierarchy button, work item key, type, and summary. This could make the list feel cluttered and harder to scan—especially if you manage a high volume of items.

🚀 What’s changed?

In the All Work tab, you’ll now see a single unified column on the left that combines the hierarchy toggle (for expanding child items), work item key, type, and summary — all in one place.

This column is fixed in position and can’t be moved, so that your key work info stays anchored as you scroll and scan your list.

You can still sort by each individual field! Just click the three dots (…) in the Work item column header and choose which attribute—key, type, or summary—you want to sort by.

And if you're exporting your data, don’t worry: exports remain unchanged. Each field will still appear as its own separate column in CSV or Excel exports, preserving the full detail and structure you're used to.

🌱 Why we made this change

This isn’t just a visual update—it’s a foundational improvement designed to support future UX upgrades and make Jira faster for you.

By consolidating fields into a single column, we’ve created space for more powerful features down the line while improving page performance today. Faster loading times and a smoother scrolling experience are just the beginning.

đź’ˇ How to try it out

To use the merged column in Jira:

  1. Go to your Jira project.

  2. Switch to the All Work tab.

  3. Check out the first column, which now merges hierarchy, key, type, and summary into one neat line.

âś… Benefits

  • Cleaner workspace: Reduces visual clutter by eliminating redundant columns.

  • Faster Jira: Lighter UI means faster load times and better performance.

  • Future-ready: Sets the stage for upcoming UX improvements that build on this new column structure.

  • Streamlined navigation: Quickly find the information you need without juggling multiple columns.

Let us know what you think.

I sincerely do not like this change. Sorting a list by summary is one of the most common sorts anyone does and you have now tripled the number of clicks required to do so.

I would ask that you consider putting a sort button back into the header tied to summary and allow the users to use the overflow menu if they want to sort by key or type.

@Tanya Maddalena What is the release plan / date for this change?

To Avery's point Atlassian sure seems to like moving common operations under a menu which requires more clicks to accomplish which has become pretty frustrating over the past year or so. Fortunately for me we hid the All Work tab on our boards because it didn't provide any additional value compared to the List tab and in fact is worse because it includes resolved work items by default.

@Tanya Maddalena

Why is this feature impacting the results for Filters if it was only intended to impact the All Work tab?

I don't want these columns grouped together when I run a JQL query.  I want to be able to move the Issue Type, Key, and Summary columns to any column location I want.  However, this change has removed this option from me and anyone else who uses their own custom column order and location for these fields.  To be honest, the formatting in the grouped Work column is annoying if you don't have fixed-width keys, and this is more of a step back than forward in terms of functionality.

I do not like the change, as I am working often with list view and here I cannot select a descending sort by key only. will this be  available in future?

I am glad that Joe pointed out that filters are impacted by this change. I had put this aside as not important to me since I hide the All Work tab on my team's boards but now I see that the title of this article is very misleading as the change is not limited to just the All Work tab.

I understand the desire to improve performance but Jira becomes slower for me when I now have to click multiple times to do something which used to require zero clicks. This feels similar to a lot of the UI changes in the past year where it takes several more clicks to perform common actions now than it did before.
