Add New Sub-Task Issue Type to Existing Company Type Project

Serge Creator January 13, 2024

How can I add a newly created Issue Sub-Task Type to an existing project? Not sure how to assign a new issue. I can see a new issue created in the settings, but I cannot see it while I'm creating a task. Please help

Here is the quick loom video

Hi Serge,

I am sorry that the answer you got before was misleading - it was generated by an AI that has no understanding of your question or Atlassian software.

In your video, I didn't see what type of project you are using, so I'm going to give two answers.

1. If you are in a team-managed project, then the global issue type list is irrelevant.  TMPs have a localised list of issue types, and there is only one sub-task issue type.  You can't add other types of sub-tasks.

2. In company-managed projects, you can add many sub-task types to the global list and then tell projects to use them.  Go to the project settings and look for the "issue type scheme".  This lists the issue types the project can use, and you need to make sure you've added the new issue type to it.  Note that schemes can be shared, so if you amend it, you may be affecting many projects that might not want the new sub-task.

Also, in the video, you did not show any attempt to add a sub-task to an issue.  Sub-tasks cannot be created without a parent, and "create issue" does not (yet) have a way to ask you which issue the sub-task is a part of, so it keeps it simple and does not let you choose any sub-task types for a new issue.  You have to use "create subtask" from within the issue you want to break up into smaller pieces.
