Add Status field to card creation screen

I'd like to have the status field included in the card creation screen, basically to choose to place it in backlog or to do.  I'm assuming I will have to create a custom field for this, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Status is not just a simple field in Jira. You need to do a transaction to move an issue from one status to another. That is why if you add a custom field for it then you would just set a value for the field. It would not transition the issue. If you want an issue to be transitioned upon creation, depending on the provided value for a custom field, then you would need an add-on for it like Power Scripts, Scriptrunner or Automation for Jira.
