Add story to a closed sprint

I have had some occurrences of Scrum Masters closing a sprint (from the Rapid Board) after someone has "accidentally" removed a closed Story. Is there a way to put that story back in the closed sprint via the UI or database?

One way is to temporary add the Sprint field to the edit screen, and add the id of the sprint in the sprint field for the missing story. But it will not be included in the sprint report as that already has been generated. But it included if you search on that sprint in the issue navigator

Unfortunately this seems to be the only way to work it out. Disappointing.
