Adding attachment on the CreateIssue gives "Uncaught Error: auth required"

We have created a screen for reporting issues without the need for users to be logged in. It works well except adding attachments is not possible. There is no error in the UI and the attachment field is shown (and also the thumbnail after an update attempt). However, the upload does not go through and the the browser console shows: "Uncaught Error: auth required". This suggests that one needs to be logged in to upload an attachment with the screen. However, we would want users to submit issues without having to be our JIRA users. I have tried to set all field permissions possible for the fields but without success including the group "anyone".  Issue creation works but not with attachment. Any ideas how this can be enabled?

Hi Warren, I mean within JIRA, just the CreateIssue.jspa page that is the default create issue type.

I'm not sure what you mean by "a screen for reporting issues". Is this somehow within Jira or is it an external application?
