All users without avatars now show white text on white background- effectively invisible

All of a sudden, all our users without specific avatar images are showing as white text on a white or transparent background. This means their initials no longer display. 

Aside from bugging each user to go into their profile and select a new background color, how can I set them up all at once, with random background color assignments, like before?
