Are mail server encrypted in database?

We use Jira v4.4.1. We have some Jira projects that monitor an email mailbox using POP. When you setup the username/password in Jira, is the password encrypted when saved to the database? Is that documented anywhere?

Yes, passwords are encrypted and the methodology does change over time.
