Assign Epics to Tasks

HolmanG November 6, 2019

On previous version of JIRA, I was able to create Epic labels and assign them to tasks. We just migrated to JIRA Cloud and I don't see an option on my Kanban board to configure Epics and tag my tasks with created Epics like before.

Can someone tell me how to do that please? Thank you.

Hi @HolmanG

I see that you have recently started using Jira Software Cloud, and that you are looking to be able to see the epics on cards in a kanban board.  I have good news for you.  This can still be done today in Classic Kanban boards in Jira Cloud, but this feature is not enabled on all Kanban boards by default.

Also part of the confusion here between your screenshots I think is that the first is showing your a backlog view, while the second is showing the active board.   I mention this because you'll need to add those Jira issues to the epic first in the backlog view, before you can see them in the active board view.  You can't actually do this from the active board view, it has to be done from the backlog first.

To do that in Jira Software Cloud today, go to the Kanban board itself, in the top right corner you will see a button with three dots on it ...   Click that and choose Board Settings.  From there go to the Columns section, and then enable the "Epics Panel" switch there, like so:

Once you do that, you can then return to the board and then go to the backlog, you will find that you can then see and create epics directly in the backlog there.  Once you add some issues to that backlog that are in the active board, that epic label will appear on the active board as well, just like it does in my screenshot below:

Try that out, and let me know if this helps or if you run into problems doing this.

Cheers,

Andy

@Andy Heinzer Thanks for the feedback. I just tried what you asked with NO success. When I go to column settings, I do not see option to enable "Epics Panel". See screenshot below. Any ideas?

Hi @Holman Gutierrez

Thanks for the feedback here.  You have to first add at least one status to the Kanban Backlog on at the bottom of that page.  In your screenshot you don't have any statuses in there so you don't see a backlog option on a kanban board yet.  You can do this by just clicking and dragging that status name onto that column like so:

Once you add at least one status there, you will see the Epics panel switch appear on that page.  Sorry I did not make that requirement clear in my first reply.  Try that and let me know the results.
