Auto ranking based on priority

Peter March 10, 2022

I'm looking for a feature / plugin for Jira that auto assigns (and changes) a number based on the position of an item on the backlog.

So for example I have 10 items on the backlog and every item has a number (Sorting priority). In this case the top item has #1 and the bottom #10.
When I would revise the sorting priority I might want to put the bottom item (#10) on top, which pushes the previous #1 to #2 and previous 9# to 10#.

If I only have 10 items I could change this manually but unfortunately I don't and the sorting priority often changes. Is there a way to have this number automated so that it also shows up like that in a Excel export for example.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

What you are describing there is a "rank" field, which Jira already provides.  It's not numerical though (because that can't work properly), and it's of not much use to the end-user directly because the raw data is not numeric (and numbers won't work for end users anyway, as they become subjective depending on what people are looking at)

Just sort your filters with "order by rank" and you'll find it does what you need, most notably in a board backlog.
