Avatars - Image Format

Is there any standard that we should be using only jpeg format images ? If yes , does it create problems if we use gif or png files ?

I haven't got any problems uploading png and gifs (though the gif was not moving when I used that). So I think JIRA is manipulating whatever you uploaded to its most optimized form.
