Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some guidance on industry best practices for managing projects in Jira. Here’s my situation:
I’d love to hear how others in the industry handle these situations and what Jira setup works best to balance development, support, and client change requests without losing visibility or overcomplicating the setup.
Thanks in advance!
Hi @Shehan Sandeepa ,
Decide with your team which process works best for them (e.g., Scrum or Kanban). Personally, I prefer Scrum because using story points and tracking velocity adds predictability.
Epics: Create epics for features that span about one month to one quarter.
Stories: Break down epics into stories that fit within a single sprint.
Components: Use components to categorize stories.
Bugs: Keep bugs in the same project, but assign them a dedicated issue type (e.g., Bug).
For customer requests, add a custom field called Customer to capture the client name. You can use components or labels to further categorize these requests.
When it comes to boards vs. projects, I recommend creating one project per team. This gives flexibility in configuring settings such as workflows, permissions, schemes, components, and versions. It also makes Jira Plans more effective, since grouping by project naturally aligns with grouping by team.
I would avoid creating a separate project per client. Instead, use a custom dropdown field to list clients, which keeps everything centralized and easier to report on.
