Best practive for password policy if Jira has LDAP write permission

I have a Jira with write permission to OpenLDAP. I also have a Conflence with write permission to manage Confluence groups.

I would like to have just one password policy. And I would prefer to have it in the LDAP server.

I am wondering how Jira writes the passwords to the LDAP. I have to configure the hash type, when I define the directory in Jira. For what is this used? Does Jira hash the passwords already on the client side?

If so OpenLDAP gets just the hash and can not enforce the password policy.
