Body of Jira email notifications are converted into strange text

Has this ever happened to you? If yes, what caused it and how did you fix it? All of a sudden, the email notifications we receive when someone does an update in a Jira story have this weird text in the body instead of the actual message. The story itself looks fine, so it's only our emails that are messed up. Here's a sample of some of the text:

Hi Tracie,

I have seen a couple of these in the Community this morning. You should go ahead and open a support ticket with Atlassian as it sounds like a bug got introduced. Please post back here with the resolution.
