Is there a way to do a bulk worklog issue move from one state in a workflow to another?
For example there are 3 stories and a task in sprint A that needs to be moved from workflow state, "In Review" to "In Progress". Can this be done in bulk? Also if I do this and its a mistake is there a way to revert the issues to the former state in an automated way?
Andrew,
To accomplish this you would want to leverage the "Bulk Change" option that is available in JIRA.
To perform, you must ensure that there is a value transition going from "In Review" to "In Progress". If there is, you should start by filtering for the tickets that you want to transition. A good place to start might be 'Status = "In Review"'. Once you have the tickets you want o transition, you should navigate to the upper right hand corner. You should find there a button called "Tools">"Bulk Change".
Select Bulk change and choose the issues you want to transition and hit next. On the next screen, you will be allowed to select "transition issues". Click on that and it should give you a list of the available transitions from the statuses the tickets are currently in. You will need to choose what statuses the tickets are transitioning to. If it asks you for a resolution, don't fill out anything.
If you make a mistake, there are ways to get the tickets back where they were, but it might not be the easiest.
Hi Kian,
I read about bulk change and wanted to confirm that this was the mechanism to do the change. Could you please explain, what is value transition? I understand the state change you spoke about, "In Review" to "In Progress". Regarding moving the change back I would assume one thing to do prior to do it first is to make a filter and get a result then try to export that result say to excel or something? This way you know what was affected. Then you can make your change and if you have to go back you have a manifest of what you changed. What does.....not the easiest mean in terms of rolling back a bulk change?

A transition is the mechanism for changing from one status to another, i.e. the action that a user triggers when they want to go from "in review" to "in progress"

Andrew,
All I meant by "If you make a mistake, there are ways to get the tickets back where they were, but it might not be the easiest." is that if you understand JIRA well you can get your tickets back into roughly the same shape that they were in previously. By that I mean the tickets occupy the same statuses, with the same values stored in custom fields, ect. There would be an impact to the history of the affected tickets, obviously.
If you don't understand how to perform bulk updates to status transitions, then getting your tickets back to the way that they were might be a challenge for you as it may require workflow changes and bulk updates. It wouldn't be as simple as just clicking a button to "revert" the tickets.
There are options for "reverting" the state of your instance, but those are somewhat involved. I'm not sure I would recommend them for getting statuses back to what you want.
