Can JIRA (Free) support a type of "Portfolio"?

stevejosue October 15, 2021

We are looking for a portfolio tool that can expand from the Epic>Feature>Story level across a timeline. Thanks!

The free version of Jira allows you to add new issue types, just be aware that Jira will only recognize the level of Epic -> Story/Task -> Sub-task. If you want to expand that you would have to use the premium version to get Advanced roadmap, or look at adding an app like Structure to your Jira instance.

Unfortunately there are no solutions at this time, I would classify as Portfolio management. Advanced Roadmaps does not have more than group based resource management now that even the basic features on individual level has been removed.

BigPicture is probably the closest you get, but its Boxes setup is more like a mix of Jira projects and Boards rather than a hierarchy of activities, which makes it a bit clumpsy to work with.

All are also based on Jira activities, which means that it is not that easy to handle resources that do not have any tasks, but rather wok in supporting capacities.

Just so you know :)

Hi @stevejosue

If you consider using an additional application, which supports different project management frameworks, have a look at the Marketplace. Here you can find Top-rated Jira apps.

My company product - BigPicture (featured as a Staff Pick) seems to match your business needs and therefore I would like to add a few words about how the plugin can support your work.

With BigPicture, you can create an automatic, no-limited number of WBS levels. Task Structure can be created based on both build-in task attributes (e.g., Epic link, Component, Version, Sprint) as well as Jira links (e.g., Parent-Child relation).

Here, you will find a short video presenting how to create desired task structure (WBS) in BigPicture/BigGantt. I hope you will find it helpful.

I will gladly continue the discussion once you provide me with more details on your requirements.
Anna
