Can a field be optional on one screen and required on another

I have a need where i do not want to force a screen to have a required field on the main entry screen but have that same field required on a workflow transition.

So my plan was to have the field optional on the main screen for the issue type but required on the screen that is invoked durring a workflow transition.

Is this possible?

Or, perhaps i keep the field optional and inforce the required field somehow in workflow transition.

any advice would be appreciated.

As you said you would need to force the field to be required in the transition. You can do this with the field required validator from the JIRA Suite Utilities Plugin (availabe for OnDemand)
