Can advanced roadmap in jira predict end date of cross-project releases based on velocity of teams?

Vishakha Dahra September 1, 2024

Our work hierarchy is structured as Initiatives > Epics > Stories > Sub-tasks.

Can Advanced Roadmaps in Jira predict the delivery dates of cross-project releases based on my teams' velocity?

I need to be able to:

  1. Visualize all initiatives and their associated tasks (epics, stories, sub-tasks) across multiple projects or boards in a single view.
  2. View the target dates for initiatives as set by the product team.
  3. See the delivery dates calculated automatically based on my teams' velocity—estimating how many sprints it will take to complete an initiative based on the total story points. The predicted delivery dates should adjust dynamically as stories are added or removed and as story points change.

I have access to Advanced Roadmaps in Jira. In our setup, the product team assigns target dates to initiatives, while the development team estimates story points for individual stories.

Hi @Vishakha Dahra,

As far as I know, it is not possible to predict the end-dates, but I might be wrong because I am not familiar with latest versions of Advanced Roadmap. As far as I can see, it provides some tracking capabilities, but does not seem to be able to predict the end-dates based on velocity.

Take a look over the documentation available here: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/track-releases-from-your-timeline/

Another solution would be to search on Atlassian Marketplace for an app that provides this functionality.

If you consider the option of using an app, our Great Gadgets app offers a Release Burndown Burnup Chart gadget that can predict the ETA based on the team's velocity.

The exact steps for configuring this gadget in the way you want can be found here: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/App-Central-articles/How-to-create-an-epic-burndown-or-burnup-chart-in-Jira-and/ba-p/2737935. The only difference is that you will have to configure it with a filter that returns the issues from an initiative (instead of epic).
